What is the Difference Between a Variable Frequency Drive and a S
oft Start Drive?

 

When you are looking for a piece of equipment to adjust the speed of your electric motor, you may be asking yourself, “What is the difference between a variable frequency drive and a soft start drive?”  They both offer a gradient soft start when starting motors, and they provide control of your motor during operations.


What makes these drives different is the speed that the motor can run when at full speed.  With a soft start drive, the voltage is reduced to start the motor.  When the motor reaches full speed, a timing circuit has timed out, and a "running by-pass contractor" pulls in resulting in the motor running at full speed.


With a variable frequency drive, it also allows your motor to soft start. However, instead of running your motor at full speed, you can adjust your speed by varying the output frequency from the variable frequency drive.  If you don’t need to vary your speed during operations, the soft start is your correct solution.

                                                     Using a Soft Start Drive can be more economical
You can use a variable frequency drive instead of a soft start drive to start and stop your motors. However, if you do not need to vary the production speed of your motor during operation, then the soft start drive is your most economical solution because soft start drives are significantly lower in cost then the variable frequency drives.  In order to clear up any confusion you may have, be sure to read our articles on soft start drives and variable frequency drives.
