Inverters

An inverter is an electronic circuit that converts DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current).  Inverters are used in a wide range of applications.  Inventors come in many varieties, sizes and offer various features that specialize them for particular applications.  To learn more about the different types of inverters, visit  Variable Frequency Drives.  Some of the applications that inverters are used for are small switching power supplies in computers to large electric utility applications that transport bulk power.

Basic Inverter Design

In an inverter circuit, DC power is connected to a transformer through the center tap of the primary winding.  A switch is rapidly switched back and forth to allow current to flow back to the DC source following two alternate paths through one end of the primary winding and then the other.  The alternation of the direction of current in the primary winding of the transformer produces AC power in the secondary circuit.

Inverter Applications

Inverters convert DC power into AC powerInverters convert DC electricity from batteries, solar panels, or fuel cells to AC electricity.  This electricity can then be used to operate household appliances and equipment.  When electrical power is lost, inverters can be used for backup power sources by using batteries to store power and an inverter to supply AC power from the batteries.  Inverters are also used with HVDC power transmission.  AC power is rectified and high voltage DC power is transmitted to another location.  At the receiving location, an inverter in a static inverter plant converts the power back to AC.  Inverters are used in electric vehicles such as battery powered vehicles and hybrid electric cars.  Locomotives and diesel-electric locomotives also use inverters.  These are just a few examples of how inverters can be used.  Whenever you want to transform your DC current to AC current, inverters make a excellent solution.
